I started “Bad Day All Day!” because of the alarming lack of off-season training and conditioning programs for Defensive Backs. In fact, there is no noticeable “footprint” accessible on the internet. If your son needed training to improve his skill set as a DB there were no opportunities to explore. If there are any training programs in existence I couldn’t find them. So I started my own program and library.

Please note that some of the articles posted have been written by others which I have collected over the years and I take no attribution for their work. I thank them for contributing to the evolution and improvement of the game.

Have a Bad Day All Day!!!

101 Defensive Back Drills

Warm-Up Drills

1.       Run and Twist

-       4 lines of DB’s (corner, safety, safety, corner)
-       Start-off in a short Backpedal, then on Coach “Turn”, turn to your right
-    Continue to run straight back, on “Turn”, turn to your left and keep going (start off at a moderate pace and work up to full speed)

2.       The Bull In The Ring

-      Players form a circle around one player, who is acting as the “bull” in the ring
-   The bull attacks any player he desires (or the coach can control the bull’s selection of a “target” by pointing to a player)
-    After a good sharp pad-to-pad contact is made with 3-4 different players, the coach assigns a different player to be a “bull”

Quickness Drills

1.       Back-Pedal And Slide

-      4 lines of DB’s
-      Start-off in a low back-pedal position
-      Coach will start players off in a back pedal by slapping the ball
-     After you backpedal for about 4 yards, Coach will point ball in one direction (Lt or Rt)
-          Players should then slide (not cross over) in that direction (stay low while moving)
-      When the coach slaps the Ball again, players should again Backpedal
-       Drill will repeat several times

2.       Around The Cone

-      Two lines of Defensive Backs for a relay race
-      4 cones – with two yards between each cone – should be placed 5 yards in front of each line
-       First Player in each line sprints forward on the Coach’s command
-      When he gets to each cone, he circles the cone (in a balanced, poised manner), using very short, choppy steps, then continues to the next cone
-       After circling the last cone, the player back-pedals along the side of the cones to where the next player in line is waiting

3.       Around The Bag

-    Same thing as above drill except will run forward and weave in-and-out around the bags
-     Always start on the inside of the bags
-   Focus on planting a foot and pushing off in the new direction when the players are weaving through the bags

Movement Drills

1.       Back-Pedaling And Reaction To The Ball

-       4 lines of DB’s
-      On “Set” always get in a defensive stance
-    On the Coach’s command “Hut” or “Slap of the Ball”, players will start to back-pedal for about 10 yards
-    A Ball will be thrown by the Coach and all players should react to the ball, trying to catch (intercept) the football
-    Players should keep their proper alignment, keeping their eyes on the coach – ready to react to the ball

2.       Keep Low

-       Spread out in several rows facing Coach
-       Assume a good defensive stance on “Set”
-       Feet should be staggered
-    On the Coach’s command, “Hut”, the players should push off with their back foot and continuing to move backward, alternately drag their left foot, then their right foot (shuffling) about 10 yards (remain low and knees bent)
-      On the Coach’s command “Recover”, the players should sprint to the spot where they started

3.       Wave

-       4 lines of DB’s
-      On the Coach’s command “Hut”, the players will back-pedal down the line
-      The coach will then point either left or right to have the players swing one of their legs across their body so that they are facing the direction he is pointing
-      The coach will then point in the opposite direction to go the other way
-     Throughout the drill, the players should continue to back-pedal and maintain their balance
-   On the Coach’s command “Recover,” players should run back to where they started

4.       Break And Churn

-      4 DB’s assume the defensive positions, facing the Coach
-     On the Coach’s command “Hut”, the players start to back-pedal
-    After about five yards, the Coach will command “Break” and the players should break at a 45 degree angle in the direction the Coach is pointing
-     After running about 5 yards in their new direction, the Coach will command “Recover” which signals the players to churn their feet while changing direction to run back as quickly as possible directly to where they started the drill
-      Must have the ability to change directions without planting or stopping your feet
-       Make sure to accelerate every time you change direction

5.       Back-Pedaling And Breaking At 45 Degrees

-       1 DB and a Coach 5 to 10 yards apart
-      Coach will direct the DB which way to go by pointing the football
-      The DB reacts by moving backwards at a 45-degree angle in the same direction as the coach has moved the football
-      The Coach will move the DB in the opposite direction 3-4 times
-    The DB will intercept the football and return it by running through the Coach

6.       Back-Pedaling And Breaking At 90 Degrees

-       1 DB and a Coach 5 to 10 yards apart
-      “Set” = good stance, “Hut” start backpedaling straight back
-  Coach will move football either right or left and the DB should reach immediately by moving in the same direction at a 90-degree angle laterally
-      The Coach will throw the ball and DB will intercept it and SCORE

7.       Turn And Go

-       1 DB and a Coach 1-2 yards away
-       “Set” = good stance, “Hut” = DB starts back-pedaling straight back
-      When the Coach commands “Turn”, the player reacts immediately by turning and sprinting in the same direction as he has been moving (simulating catching up with the WR)
-       The Coach will throw the football over the outside shoulder of the DB
-      The DB should intercept the football, sprint forward toward the Coach and SCORE

8.       Run The Line

-      1 DB and a Coach 5 – 10 yards away
-      “Hut”, the player opens to the way the Coach shows the football and turns 180 degrees and runs straight back keeping his eyes on the coach
-    The Coach will change direction several times and the DB should open hips, and drop his butt and turn 180 degrees each time
-     After several turns, the Coach will throw the ball and the DB should intercept the football and SCORE

Reaction Drills

1.       React To The Ball

-       DB form one line about 20 yards from the Coach, facing him
-     When the Coach raised the football showing pass, the first player in line sprints toward the Coach at top speed
-    When the player gets within 3-4 yards of the Coach, the Coach throws the football at the player’s chest, requiring the player to react quickly to the ball and catch it before it hits him

2.       Break To The Ball

-     Db form one line about 20 yards from the Coach, facing him
-   When the Coach raises ball showing pass, the first player in line sprints toward the Coach at to speed
-     When the player gets within 10 yards of the coach, the coach pumps his arm like faking a pass toward the side he wants the player to break
-     The player should then break at a 90-degree angle to that side
-    Once the player makes his break, the coach should throw the football at the player to make him react quickly to catch the ball

Tackling Drills

1.       Form Tackling

-    Players will face each other on opposite sides of a yard line approximately 2-3 yards apart
-      One line will be designated the ball carrier, while the opposite line will serve as the tacklers
-    Each tackler should pick the ball carrier opposite him and carry him backwards 2-3 yards and set him down on his feet
-      Keep heads up, eyes open, neck-bowed tackle should be the goal of each tackler
-      Can also tackle at 45-degree angle, instead of head-on

2.       The Popsicle Stick-Drive

-    Players should form a single line, one behind the other, facing the one-man sled at a distance of 10 yards
-    On command, the first player will run forward, get into hitting position in front of the sled, wrap his arms around the midsection of the Popsicle, thrust his hips forward, and drive the sled up to the rear until the coach gives the command to “Drop It”

3.       The Popsicle Stick-Take Down

-          Same as drill before, except the player will drive the sled into the ground

4.       The Butt Tackle

-       The drill involves having players work in groups of two – with one acting as a ball carrier and the other as a tackler
-    The Coach positions 3 to 4 bags about 5 yards apart on the line with the two players facing each other about 3 or 4 yards apart
-      The drill begins when the Coach says “Hut”
-    The ball carrier moves perpendicular to the LOS and heads for a hole in between the bags
-     The tackler will run with the ball carrier and meet him in the hole and “Butt” him up and quick wrap without tackling him
-      They will both bounce back and work each gap all the way through
-    After the last bag, the tackler will tackle (bring to the ground) the ball carrier

5.       The Sideline Tackle

-      One player acts as a ball carrier, while the other is designated as a tackler
-    The drill starts with both players on a hash mark facing each other about 10 yards apart
-  The Coach begins the drill by tossing the ball to the ball carrier who is simulating a sweep toward the sideline
-    The designated defensive player takes one step back and out, reads, runs, and then sprints toward the sideline
-  The tackler approaches the ball carrier while maintaining an inside-out relationship
-     The tackler attempts to give the ball carrier only two choices – run over him or get knocked out of bounds
-      If the ball carrier tries to cut back, the tackler must correct his leverage and make a heads-up tackle

6.       The Open Field Tackle

-      The Coach arranges the field into a 15 yard wide tackling area with yard lines marked every five yards
-     The players work in groups of two, with one acting as a ball carrier and the other as a tackler
-   The ball carrier starts the drill standing in the middle of one end of the tackling area, while the defender assumes a position lined up off to one side at the opposite end of the zone
-       “Hit”, the defender sprints to the center of the zone, breaks down and prepares to tackle
-       The coach then throws the ball to the runner
-       The ball carrier then proceeds toward the tackler
-     The ball carrier should run hard, avoid going outside the zone, and is allowed only one elusive maneuver
-    The defensive player should back off the runner when he gets 6-7 yards away from him, await the fake, and commit only after the runner had committed

7.       The Sideline Towel Tackle

-      The coach places a towel six yards from a sideline
-      The drill involves pairing the players up
-      One player serves as a ball carrier, while the other is designated as a tackler
-     Each pair of players starts the drill by facing each other at a distance of 12-15 yards, ten yards in from the sideline
-    “Hit”, the offensive player runs to a point between the towel and the sideline and attempts to make the defensive player miss him
-      The tackler starts at the same command and approaches at an angle to cut off the runner
-     The goal of the defensive back is to stop the runner short of the imaginary line between the towel and the sideline

8.       Pursuit Tackling

-     The drill involves four defensive players who are aligned in their normal four-deep positions and two offensive ball carriers positioned on the LOS approximately two yards inside the sideline
-      When the coach motions, one of the runners starts running down the sideline.
-      Each defensive back takes a couple of steps backward, recognizes the direction of the run and takes the proper pursuit angle
-    The coach designates who is to make the tackle (usually one of the defensive backs from the opposite side of the field)
-    The defensive back selected should use the sideline as a 12th man and make the tackle

If you need more just ask. I have a million of em’!
